It's kind of hard to keep reviewing the same place over and over again. Although I have eaten at some new places since August!

In news, I'm kind of sad to be forced to stop visiting Dumpling House Restaurant in Toronto due to rats. Despite the fact that they are open again and the health inspector has ok'd everything, I just wouldn't feel right going back there! Once a rat haven, always a rat haven? I don't even feel like I should write a review for it. The dumplings there were so good, but who knows if they were tainted. Yuck!

I may be moving downtown to Toronto soon, so that should open up my experiences and give me some new stuff to write with!

Summer Eats

Here's a rundown of some of the restaurants I've been to this summer:

Bb33 Bistro - went for summerlicious. I really enjoyed it, despite it being in a hotel.

Kit Kat - another summerlicious restaurant. It was ok but nothing special. Their seafood bisque was very tasty though.

George Bigliardi's - my last summerlicious experience this summer. A pretty good steakhouse with more reasonable prices than other steakhouses in the city.

Swatow Restaurant - I've done takeout from here a couple of times this summer. They give you sooo much food. Great value!

Red Lobster - a fallback restaurant we go to. Service is hit and miss here. Good food, but you can only eat so much of it.

Peter's on Eglinton - another family favourite. Fantastic service, huge portions, great food!

The Pickle Barrel - again service here is hit and miss. Their menu is so long that it's too much to handle, but generally anyone can find something to eat.

Axia Restaurant and Bar - getting better over time. Really fresh food, but way too expensive.

Baton Rouge - really good food but the portions are ridiculously huge, which makes them too expensive. I don't understand why they don't just lower the portions and prices.

Summerlicious 2007

Summerlicious started today! If you look at ResToronto Reviews, you can see that in the beginning days there have been some service problems. Also, if you look at my previous post you can also see some of the service problems I've personally experienced.

I visited Axia again a weekend ago. So the question is, has the service changed?

My friend and I made reservations for a Saturday night. A couple weeks before that I had tried to get in there on a Saturday and the wait was an hour. I decided better be safe and made the reservation. When we got there there were plenty of seats so reservations weren't necessary.
The most important change is that service has improved. They are more attentive and quicker than they were when I first visited. The waitress was continuously checking up on us to make sure we had everything we needed.
I did have a couple of problems with my drinks however. Other tables were getting ice water to drink but my water was always room temperature. Additionally, the lemon ice tea they advertise is from a can - I don't suggest it!
I had the galbi bbq which was (as always) delicious. The cheques were given quickly, and we were personaly given a mint as we walked out the door!

So I'm happy to report that service has improved immensely.

Dining over the long weekend

The long weekend is the perfect time to get out and enjoy life! During the weekend, I ended up visiting three different restaurants. Even though they were all ones I had been to before, I had some new experiences!

I went and had lunch at Viet Thai Restaurant. We have our favourites by now and order the same time every single time we get in there. That includes lemongrass chicken and beef noodles. The service was very quick this time and for 2 people, the total bill was about $30.

I also went for dinner at Baton Rouge. I had forgotten how expensive this place is simply because their portions are way too big for one person. They have a 16oz prime rib, and that's the only size you can order. Once we were seated, we ordered drinks. Then we had about a 10 minute wait between ordering our drinks and getting the server to come back so we could order our meal. Also, this place is really loud so you can hardly hear what your server is saying. The food is good, but just too much, so you have to take things home and get a huge hole in your wallet. For 2 people, the total bill was $80.

Finally, I went for a quick lunch to Boston Pizza. There was only one other group of people in the restaurant when we arrived, which I thought was kind of weird. I usually order their chicken sandwich but thought that maybe I should try something different, so I tried one of their pizzas. The "meateor" pizza was a meat pizza. However, there was a lot of oil and water under the pizza which made it a little soggy. I wasn't impressed and I think the next time I'll stick with the chicken sandwich. For 2 people, the total bill was $30.

Mother's Day Brunch in Ottawa

I received an email from Lieutenant's Pump in Ottawa regarding their mother's day brunch. It seems like it goes on forever. There's a lounge area in the back with pool tables which I'm sure gets busy on weekend nights. Today I went there before going to the Princess of Whales theatre for a show. The atmosphere in this place is great! It's typical Irish pub. Chelsea was playing on all the screens to that pre-occupied me for a while, but we were seated by a fire and the bookcase. The tables are really small so we had to put some of the stuff on the table on the extra chair. Service at this place is another issue. I heard people behind us complaining about having to wait 35 minutes for their lunch so I knew we were going to have a bit of troubles. Luckily, the only troubles we had was getting the bill, which took 2 attempts and about 10 minutes before we actually got it.

I had the roast beef dip, which was yummy. The fish and chips looked good, as did the platter that had cheese, bread, and cold cuts. I decided to try their apple berry crumble which was delicious! However, the coffee isn't that great. And when I asked for milk, I got an empty milk carton, and more cartons of cream.

I would consider going back for a drink after work.

Too see more reviews of Elephant & Castle, go to ResToronto Reviews.

Turtle Jack's Muskoka Grill in Burlington

Last Friday, during the crazy snow storm, and late at night (9:30), we happened on the restaurant Turtle Jack's. Of course, not many people were as crazy as us to be out in that weather, so the place was practically deserted.
I generally like the atmosphere of this chain. It's lots of wooden beams, pictures of up north. There is a nice bar area with lots of tvs tuned in to different sports. We were very quickly seated at a booth and given menus. There is a fair amount to choose from, though it's mostly burgers, sandwiches, and that type of food. I ordered the steak sandwich even though I was a little skeptical of how it would turn out. It did take us a while to order the food, which was odd since there was hardly anyone else in the restaurant. After we had ordered, it took about 10 minutes for our waitress to come back and tell us that the soup one of my party members had ordered was no longer available. That information should have been given to us right away, not 10 minutes after you order!
The steak sandwich was great. Cooked just the way I liked it. The side cesear was also pretty good and after that we didn't have any more service problems.

See more reviews of this restaurant at ResToronto Reviews.

St. Patrick's Day Partying!!

Do you have a favourite pub to party on St. Patrick's Day? The mall has been in dire need for another restaurant, so Lemongrass is a welcome addition.

I went with another individual and we entered the restaurant from the mall entrance. Beware, as there is also an entrance from the outside. Since the two entrances are in completely different places of the restaurant, it can be confusing at times as to who should be seated next.
The decore of the restaurant is very stark. Dark wood, bright yellow, and white are the colours that make up the atmosphere, and it is very modern. Not much to my tastes. Plus there is dance music with thudding beats playing a little too loudly in the background. As this is a Thai restaurant, the dance music didn't seem to fit.

The first encounter we had with our server wasn't too pleasant. He seemed kind of pissed that we wanted to order drinks actually. I just ordered a soda, but the person I was with tried ordering one of their specialty teas only to be told that those aren't offered in this location. Why are they on the menu if you aren't going to serve them?

Speaking of the menu, it is huge! Everyone should be able to find something to eat at Lemongrass (assuming that they HAVE it). There is spicy and not spicy, vegetarian, and stuff full of meat/seafood/chicken/etc. I ordered the lemongrass chicken lunch special. It came with soup and rice. I tried the wonton soup as I love wonton soup, but it tasted kind of funny to me and I couldn't finish it. The lemongrass chicken wasn't what I expected of it. It was served in a red, sweet sauce. Is that lemongrass? I've had lemongrass chicken from other restaurants before and it's not served in any sauce. I wasn't too impressed, but the person I was with enjoyed her noodle dish.

Once we were finished eating, our server suddenly decided to become interested in us making sure we didn't want any more food and we were ready for our bill then bringing it promptly. Perhaps it was the fact that most of the lunch crowd had cleared out by then and he was in a better mood?

Overall, I wasn't all the impressed. They do have an extensive menu though so if I do go back I'll make sure to try something new.

See more reviews see ResToronto Reviews of Lemongrass.

Attempt at Winterlicious on the weekend at Alize

A couple friends from university and I decided to do a get together and try and hit up a Winterlicious restaurant before Winterlicious came to a close. As I'm sure many will agree, Winterlicious is a great time to try out new restaurants in hopes of finding a new favourite restaurant to visit (or because the regular menus are WAY above your typical price range!).

After looking through all of the restaurants that offer a lunch menu, we all agreed on Alize which is in the Uptown area. One of the girls got us reservations there on a Sunday only to find out that they don't serve the Winterlicious menu on Sunday for lunch (right....). But no matter, we were determined to go there anyways.

The place was PACKED! I think the only empty table was the one we had reserved. It took a while to get someone to seat us because they were so busy. The restaurant isn't that big, probably sitting about 30 people when full. But the seats are just packed so closely together you have to basically crawl over other tables to get to yours. Plus, when it's full, it is extremely loud and we were all talking in raised voices.

Is Alize a French or Italian restaurant? We argued with each other over it. They serve Italian food but the decor is French.

Anyways, we were given the brunch menu and ordered from the. Food took a bit of time but we didn't notice because we were in good company. My coffee was continuously getting topped off though so that was nice. I ordered the lasagne which came with a cesear salad. The salad was delicious!! So creamy and yummy. However the lasagne was fairly bland. They were both good portions. And once the place started clearing out, the atmosphere was much more enjoyable. No one tried any dessert.

The price was pretty good for the amount of food that was given. I'm not 100% sure if I would go back again. The restaurant is pretty far out of the way for me, so I probably wouldn't just because it is a lengthy drive.

To see more reviews on Alize, go to ResToronto Reviews.

Lunch before theatre - downtown Toronto

I love King Street in Toronto where the theatre district is. There is a whole block of restaurants for you to choose from before catching the show. Unfortunately the hours of some of those restaurants aren't quite condusive to eating before the show.
Before heading to the theatre this time, we were in a bit of a rush. We had 45 minutes to make the show so we wanted someplace quick. We ended up in Dunn's Famous Delicatessen, between Princess of Whales Theatre and Royal Alex (which is where our show was). We asked them if they could get us in and out in 45 minutes and they said no problem, so we were seated. This restaurant is long, but surprisingly not that narrow. It's nice and clean, with wood tables and benches. You can sit near the window (I suggest sitting there), or all the way at the back of the restaurant. It has a fairly pleasant atmosphere. And the washrooms are nice, clean, and don't make you want to hurl when you use them.
The two others I was with ordered their a deli sandwich, coleslaw, and a pickle. I had a chicken burger. The food was brought out quickly and was pretty tasty. If you like pickles, I suggest getting one when you are there. They are huge!
The service was so quick, that we actually had time for a coffee after our meal because we had been served so quickly.
I would definately consider going back if I'm in a rush and just want plain sandwiches/burger type food.

Go to ResToronto Reviews to see more reviews of Dunn's Famous Deli

Winterlicious in Toronto 2007!

Winterlicious is well underway. Miga used to be St. Huberts about 2 or 3 years ago and is right beside Happy Court. We got there around 1pm and there was about 5 people in line ahead of us. There was no one at the counter to seat anyone and we had to wait for about 5 minutes for there to even be someone to come up to the front to acknowledge that there were people waiting at the door. We were seated within 10-15 minutes of walking into the restaurant. It's one thing not to be seated when the restaurant is busy, but it is something completely different to not be seated because there is no one to seat you.
Once we were seated, we browsed the fairly extensive menu. There's a good selection of Korean and Japanese food. We settled on 2 lunch specials and some beef dumplings. The dumplings were pretty good, and they didn't take long to arrive. We had the LA style beef and some pork. Both were tastey. Although I admit that I thought we were going to get to barbeque on the grill. I guess the lunch specials are pre-cooked.
Once we finished our lunch, we had to wait about 10-15 minutes to get the attention of someone in the restaurant to come give us our bill (forget about trying to get your plates cleared away). The bill was brought back to us, and the price was ok. About $20 per person for a fair amount of food (you get salad, soup, sides, and an orange with your meal). But once we had left our credit card there, it took another 10 or so minutes to get them to come pick it up!!! The service was just appaling in terms of waiting for someone to come serve you.
Good food, not great service.

For more reviews on Miga, see ResToronto Reviews.

Lunch at Wangs Kitchen in Mississauga

I got a review on the site for this a while ago and had never even heard of the place even though I drive by the area frequently. Yesterday, I decided to figure out where it was and try it! Wangs Kitchen is a mix of Chinese and Indian food. I would say they specialize in spicy food. Their prices are very good for the quantity of food that you get.
There are only about 6 tables in this restaurant. I'm not too sure how busy things can get but takeout is always an option. There is a lunch menu where you can order a main dish and three sides. I'm not much of a fan of spicy food, but most of the items on their menu are spicy. I think I went for one of the least spicy items - the sweet and sour chicken - and even that had a bit of a kick! First, the soup and the spring rolls were brought out (2 of the 3 items that we chose). The spring roll was yummy, and the soup was a bit too goopey for me. Too much cornstartch. After that the main dish came out. I also had a side of rice, which was tasty. Overall, the food is pretty good. The space is a bit cramped though. The servers are very attentive and want to make sure that you have what you want!

For more reviews of Wangs Kitchen, check out ResToronto Reviews.

Lunch in Etobicoke at Big Papa's!!

With a name like Big Papa's what can go wrong? I went for lunch with some friends in Etobicoke. I was in a great mood because when I parked, I found a $50 bill in the parking lot.
The walls of Big Papa's are packed full of memorbilia, mostly Italian. I'd bet that during the World Cup in 06 this place was packed. There's a bar in the back, and an area for a small patio in the front. We sat near the window and benefited from the sun being out during the day.
There are a variety of lunch specials for $10 (including tax) that give you a drink, a soup/salad, and a 1/2 portion of whatever you order. They also have some funny challenges on the menu such as eating huge portions in an hour without being able to get out of your seat. I just had Ziti pasta, which is a cream based pasta with veggies and chicken. They don't really tell you what the veggies are, and I didn't like the ones that they gave me, so I passed them to my friend. The pasta was quite yummy. I also tried my friend's lobster ravioli which was also good.
I also had the homemade tiramisu. I had high expectations because it's homemade from an Italian restaurant, but it didn't quite measure up to my expectations.
Our waitress was very friendly and quick (until when we wanted to get our bill, that took a while). And the meal was fairly well priced.
Not too bad for a place to eat lunch. I don't know if I would go there for dinner though.

For more reviews on Big Papa's Trattoria, see ResToronto Reviews.

Red Lobster in Toronto (... or is that Scarborough?)

We thought that New Years Day we would go out for dinner rather than stay at home and make it (and get a trip to my grandfather's at the same time). We've been to this restaurant a few times before and it's pretty decent. There is usually a line up to get in but yesterday there were no problems, we walked right in.
We were seated behind the bar area (the first time I've been there), and didn't really have much problems with service. My dad got a flat coke for his rum and coke but that was quickly remedied.
I had the dish that had shrimp, crab (my favourite), and lobster. Sometimes servers foret to bring the crab crackers but they remembered this time.
Had coffee to finish off the night and was pleased with the meal and the service!

For more reviews on Red Lobster, go to ResToronto Reviews.

Pre-Concert Dinner Downtown Toronto at The Wokker

My friend and I were heading over to the Billy Talent/Alexisonfire/Moneen concert at The Opera House on Queen Street East and needed some food before we went. The restaurants in the area are pretty sketchy looking and we had to choose between The Wokker, and Dangerous Dan's Diner. Both looked very suspect, but there was no where else to go. We ended up at The Wokker. We figured it was ok since there were about 3 other tables worth of patrons in there, and people getting take out. Power in numbers!
It's a very small place, only about 7 tables and a bar area in the entire restaurant. We were seated quickly and given a much larger menu than expected from such a small place. The seats are gross. You sink into them when you sit down and there are weird stains all over them. All menu items are very cheap. If you order a dinner, you can get a won ton soup for 95 cents! You just can't beat that kind of deal (unless you get food poisoning or something).
I ordered won ton soup, an egg roll, and cantonese chow mein (plus a pop). My friend ordered the egg roll, chicken curry, and a drink as well. The food arrived fairly quickly. I got my soup and egg roll. The soup was yummy, as was the egg roll! And the main courses were fairly tastey as well. Much more food than I could finish. I was offered a doggy bag, but those aren't too good for concerts so I couldn't take it home.
The best part of the meal was the price. All that food for only $14! So there you go, sometimes the sketchy places turn out to be pretty good.

Happy Court in Mississauga - again!

We wanted a simple dinner last night. We've been so busy with the holiday season we just wanted something simple. So we went to the local Chinese buffet joint. For anyone looking for a place to eat during Christmas day - HAPPY COURT IS OPEN ON CHRISTMAS DAY!
Anyways, the buffet, as usual, was fairly good. It's not the best chinese food you're going to find, but it's good enough for a local place. It wasn't that full, perhaps because everyone is out for the holiday season. I wasn't that hungry but I really enjoy their won ton soup so I had a cup of that. They have an ok selection of Chinese and "Canadian" food. I like their sweet and sour pork and their egg rolls. They also have take out for anything on the buffet so for those that want to take out here, that's a good option.
For more reviews on Happy Court, see ResToronto Reviews for Happy Court.

Springrolls at Erin Mills Town Centre

Recently in the mail we received a brochure for the new restaurant at Erin Mills town Centre, Springrolls. I've heard plenty of great things from the downtown restaurants from this chain (specifically the Springrolls on Dundas), so I was excited to go try it.

The restaurant is located in what I think used to be a loading dock. It's weird because the only entrance to the restaurant is from the outside (you can't get at it from inside of the mall). It's a fairly small spot - although it does have a big area for patio space in nicer weather. The bar area is what you first see when you walk in, and it's pretty nice. We were told it was going to be a 10 minute wait, so we waited in the bar area and were asked if we wanted anything to drink.

10 minutes later, we were seated in a very small eating area. I was surprised at how small this place is! And because of it's small size, the tables are all very close and you can hear everything that your neighbours are saying.

The menu is quite large and there are a lot of options. Most of them are spicy, and not being a fan of spicey food that limited my selections a fair amount. I ended up chosing a rice dish, and my mom had a chow mein. They were both beautifully presented. Mine was a pyramid, which was pretty neat, however it was mostly rice and not as much shrimp or bbq pork. My mom's was better.

The service is average. They served us well up until when we had finished our meal then it took us a while to get the bill. I don't know why, but that seems to be happening more and more in restaurants these days.

Given the choice, I'd probably go to the Viet Thai Restaurant just down the street.

For more reviews, see Springrolls ResToronto Reviews.

Emerald Chinese Restaurant - Dim Sum in Mississauga

I went out last week for dim sum - the day when it was raining like crazy - with my mom. We went to Emerald Chinese Restaurant north east of Square One in Mississauga, and only about 15-20 minutes after we walked in, the place was full! We were seated very quickly and the food arrived right away. The place doesn't look the cleanest, but I tried to put that out of my mind. It's essentially a huge dining room, with a bar on one side, and all the tables on another.

I did notice, however, that we were seated in the Non-Asian section! Is this because the servers would know they have to speak English instead of Cantonese or Mandarin to us? I didn't get it. Why couldn't we go sit with the Asian people?

As for the servers themselves, you have to make sure you stop them to tell you what the food is. Not all of them are English speaking so it's a little difficult. But if it looks yummy, we snatched it!

Anyways, there was a great selection of food brought out. I tried some things I don't even really know what they were called! Some weren't to my tastes, but it was interesting to try new things. I think my favourites were the shrimp dumplings. Those were awesome. They had pork short ribs and spring rolls which were also very tasty. If you like any type of authentic Chinese food, you should like this place. It was pretty reasonably prices as well.

I would go back, as soon as my belt line recovers!!

For more reviews on Emerald Chinese Restaurant, see ResToronto Reviews for Emerald Chinese Restaurant.

Christmas Shopping Dining- Restaurants near Square One, Mississauga

It's that time of year again! Unless you're a complete internet shopper (and some people are), you'll be spending some time at a mall in December. Chances are, you could be there for a while! So why not treat yourself to a meal while you're out. And no, I'm not talking about fast food! You want to eat at a real restaurant!

I'll start with Square One, since this is mall I know best of all.

Currently, there are only two restaurants in the mall. If you're going to stick inside the mall, I suggest Moxie's over Johnny Rockets.

Moxie's Classic Grill - good food, but it can have very slow service. Be prepared to wait to get in and to wait once you're in there.
Johnny Rockets - read the reviews for yourself. This is just a burger joint. If you want a burger, save yourself the time, hassle, and money and go to the fast food court!

There are also quite a few restaurants across from the mall (pretty much on every side). Of all those, I suggest Canyon Creek.

Canyon Creek - I love their prime rib sandwich! So good! This tends to draw a business crowd, but it doesn't mean you aren't welcome, and there's a bar for you to eat at if your wish.
Jack Astor's - this is always the safe bet. A wide selection of foods, ok service. Nothing special, but nothing will go wrong.
Alice Fazooli's - go here if you want Italian food. It's ok, but nothing fantastic.
On the Curve - honestly I'm not sure if these guys are open for lunch, but they are for dinner. It's a bit more an aquired taste required for this restaurant.
Ruth's Chris - I'm pretty certain this is a dinner only place. It requires deep wallets to go here (if you go, call me up and invite me!). The steaks are melt in your mouth.
Failte Irish Pub - I've only been here for drinks late on a Friday night, so again, not too sure if they are open. Great atmosphere for drinks though.

Then there are the restaurants that are slightly further away, but still close enough to walk to (or preferably to drive).

Alioli Restaurant - an Italian place in an office building a little ways off.
The Enfield Fox - another pub
The Host - an Indian restaurant across the street from Wal-Mart (I believe)
The Mustard Grill - I've only heard good things about this place so one day I will make it there

There you have it! All the restaurants that I know of near Square One, Mississauga. Look for more restaurant listings of malls soon.

Or, just check out ResToronto Reviews.

Latest News

First and foremost, we've joined Blogging Chicks! Walt's is right across the street from it so we decided to eat there. On the way into the restaurant we were approached by a homeless woman telling us how sexuality is evil, etc etc. Crazy! So we walk into the restaurant and there is no one there to seat us, and not that many people in there to begin with. My friend grabs to menus and we seat ourselves, then she goes up to the bar to tell the bartender that we have seated ourselves. What does he do? He claps at her!! Weird!! The atmosphere is kind of dodgy. The bar probably sees the most action. Once we started ordering food, the service was much better. I had chicken fingers, so there isn't much you can do wrong with those. My friend had a veggie burger that she had to send back because it was so rubbery. We quickly got our bills and left! Definately not a place I would go back to.

There used to be a Walt's out in Mississauga that was a great place to go but it's been replaced by another restaurant. It's unfortunate.

To see more reviews on Walt's in Hamilton, see ResToronto Reviews for Walt's.

Rosewood Bistro in Mississauga

Last week I went out for lunch to the Rosewood Bistro. It was fairly quiet there and we were seated quickly. This has a real bistro feel to it and the atmosphere is quite nice. There are high ceilings (it's 2 stories) and the decorations are nice. The seats look like they are really uncomfortable but they actually aren't that bad. As for the menu, there are quite a few different options. They weren't too expensive, however the first time we tried to order, we were told that one of the menu items was not available. Shouldn't they tell you that while seating you? This is a wine bar as well, so there is quite a good selection of wines. I ordered the chicken cordon blue. I was told that it would take a while to make, so I was patient, and it really did take a while. The food was well presented, but the style wasn't quite for me. It was too fancy. The chicken was served with fancy vegetables. Over all, food wasn't bad. Would I go back? Maybe. It just wasn't my type of place.

To see more reviews, go to ResToronto Reviews for Rosewood Bistro.

Axia in Mississauga, Take 2

Unless I've had a really bad experience, I'm usually willing to get restaurants a second chance. It's not really like this one NEEDED it, as I probably would have gone back anyways. It's just that in the previous visit, the restaurant was a bit... raw I guess is the best way to describe it. Axia had just opened and it was obvious a few kinks needed to be worked out. This time round? Much better!
I brough my boyfriend this time, who is part Korean, and told him to decide what to order for us off the Korean section of the menu. I had some Green Tea, and he had a soda. Delicious tea, but lots of leftover leaves in the bottom (that's been happening to me a lot at home these days too and it drives me nuts!). However, major improvement #1 because last time we went, the tea came after the meal! Since the menu is so large, it took us about 5-10 minutes to figure out what we wanted. Our waiter came back 3 times to ask if we were ready. It didn't bother me, but I think it bothered my boyfriend. Once we had finally decided, we ordered, and our waiter actually asked if we wanted our appetizer with the meal or before hand! Major improvement #2! The mandu dumplings were delicious!! Yum Yum, I'm drooling just thinking about them. Our meals were also brought together - major improvement #3! My boyfriend ordered Bulgogi and I ordered Galbi. They were all brought at the same time, with the sides and the rice! My Galbi was delicious! I tried my boyfriend's Bulgogi, which was good, but no where near as good as my Galbi! Yummy again!
Still, this is an expensive place to eat. Lunch cost us (including tip) $45. Steep price! I think they should lower the price of the appetizers, because they're just as pricey as the main courses, so it's like eating for 3 if 2 people share an appetizer. They've done well in the month or two they've been open!

For more reviews on Axia, see ResToronto Reviews of Axia.

Lunch at Moxies - Square One Mall, Mississauga

My mom and I went for lunch one weekday at Moxies in Square One. We usually have problems getting into this place for dinner, so we don't bother even trying anymore. Lunch isn't too bad, but there can be lineups sometimes. I like the atmosphere there, but the waiters always feel pretentious, walking around with microphones in their ears like they're working at The Gap!
The menu there is great, there is a lot to choose from, including quite a few Asian-influenced foods. My favourite is probably the chicken burger. I've had the nachos there before too and they are good - made with real cheese rather than Cheese Whiz.
The service is a completely different issue though. It is always SLOW!! Slow to get to you, slow to get your drinks, very slow to get your food, and then slow to get your bill. It's a little pricey here, but overall not too bad. I go back, but only when I'm not in any rush, and when there isn't a lineup.
To read more about Moxies, see Moxies ResToronto Reviews.

A crappy lunch at Lucy's Seafood

I've been to Lucy's Seafood before for dinner, and gave it an overall ranking of 7/10. If I were to review based on my lunch today, it would be much lower.

We didn't have to wait at all for seating, but we were seated in an elevated booth that for some reason was really hard to get into. I had to go wash my hands before eating because we had just come from getting a pumpkin for Halloween, so my hands were dirty. The washroom was dark and not the nicest. I decided to order and appetizer (popcorn shrimp) and a salad. My mom ordered coconut shrimp and the soup. Our food came very quickly (I would give service an 8/10), but boy was I not impressed with *what* came. My popcorn shrimp were plentiful and pretty tasty. The salad on the other hand? Bad lettuce and not enough dressing. Gross!!
My mom's soup was ok, but she was only given 3 coconut shrimp (for a price of $7.50!?). Our bill came out to $32 for lunch. It was ridiculous. I'd probably rate the food I have a 4 or 5/10.

Not a good experience overall. I won't be going back for lunch.

For more Lucy's Seafood reviews, check out ResToronto Reviews Lucy's Seafood reviews.

First time at Boston Pizza in Mississauga

I don't really know what made me decide to go there, but I went to Boston Pizza with my mom a week ago for lunch. The atmosphere there is very... sports bar-ish. There is a lot to choose off the menu, so all appetites can be satisfied here. Side note: Why is this place called Boston Pizza? From my understanding, it is a chain that started in Canada. So why not Toronto Pizza?

Anyways, our server was very attentive. However getting the food was too slow for the type of restaurant, type of food, and number of people in the restaurant at the time. I expected much quicker service in that aspect. I did get a refill on my drink without having to ask for it though, so that was nice.

As for the food, I enjoyed mine. I had a chicken ciabatta sandwich, and the mayo they had on it was delicious! Some type of garlic mayo. Yum. But really, this is nothing I couldn't get elsewhere. I might go back, I might not. It's fairly close to my home so I decided to go yesterday with my mom. It's in a new building and looks pretty cool from the outside. The interior is nice looking as well, and is Asian inspired since the restaurant serves Asian food. I think I was most amazed at the menu however. It was about 15 pages long, and seperated by ethnicity. There were lunch specials, Chinese food, Japanese food (including a couple pages of sushi), Korean, and Viet/Thai. There's also about 2 pages of curry. My mom ordered off the lunch menu (a Bento box that comes with soup and tea), and I ordered off the regular menu (Cantonese chow mein, and a strawberry-banana shake).
The waiter was obviously very new to the job. You could tell he was trying hard, but you could also notice the little things. Like how he didn't realize that he should ask if you wanted something to drink before ordering your whole meal, and that you should bring everyone's food at the same time. He also seemed to forget my mom's soup, and only brought her tea with the bill (the tea was excellent though). Definately not the best service right now, but I can see it improving over time.
The meals were VERY fresh! Some of the freshest shrimp I think I've ever had at a restaurant. I was taken by surprise when there was squid (or at least I think it was squid) in my cantonese chow mein. I'm not an adventurous eater, and I'm sorry but they just don't look appealing at all! I took them off my plate and the rest was delicious!
This place isn't cheap though. For the 2 of us, I think it ended up costing just under $40.

For more reviews, check out Axia ResToronto Reviews.

One of my favourite restaurants - Saucy in Streetsville/Mississauga

My family is repeat eaters at Saucy's in Streetsville. We just can't get enough there (and everytime we go in we convince ourselves we're going to order something other than the usual but only 1/2 the time are we successful).

If you are visiting this place on the weekend, make reservations ahead of time or else you will be sitting in the bar area on stools that aren't too comfortable. Also, if you can, there's a table that's tucked away beside a window and behind the wine rack at the front. It's a great table. Request it if you can! Also, this restaurant is a 19+ restaurant, so don't expect to be able to bring your kids there!

We started off with bruschetta, and once we had finished all the bread (but still had tomatoes left), we were given extra garlic bread at no additional cost. There's always great service here (though I've always wondered why there is never a male waiter?). I ordered my favourite, the chicken linguini, and others ordered pasta, lamb, and a sirloin. All if it was fantastic! And the portions are huge (not something you would expect from a restaurant like this). It's more than enough to take home and fill you up once again for lunch.

I splurged and had a tiramisu for dessert - also very good (but pretty pricey at $10).
My only complaint - their coffee is pretty bad. It's way too strong and bitter.

This is a great place to go to! Everything was too fancy for my tastes yesterday, but we settled on Rocco's Trattoria. Once inside the restaurant I felt like I was in a trendy Toronto restaurant. The downstairs is a bar and casual eating area while the upstairs is more geared towards people that want to stay and chat over their meal. Everything upstairs is painted a different, lively colour. Rocco's certainly gives off a fun vibe. Additionally, I loved the fact that there was a skylight in the middle of the room because it seemed to brighten things up a bit more.

Our server was attentive and quick (that is, until we had finished our meal). We were given delicious bread with oil and balsamic vinegar to start, a traditional Italian starting. However we were told that if we wanted to order pizzas it would take an additional 15-20 minutes. Unfortunately my mom wanted to order a pizza and decided that she better not (we were on a parking meter). I had chicken fettucini. The sauce was amazing! If only I could duplicate it for my own cooking!

Our waiter sort of disappeared after we were finished so it took us a while to get our bill. Other than the slight problems with the service (nothing too major though), it was a great experience!

For more reviews of Rocco's Trattoria, see ResToronto Reviews for Rocco's Trattoria.

Lunch in Buffalo on Thursday, Dinner in Mississauga on Saturday

My mom and I took a trip down to Buffalo, New York on Thursday for some shopping and mailling. In the Wallden Galleria, we decided to try our luck at the restaurant Ruby Tuesday. I'm actually surprised that this restaurant hasn't found its way into Canada given the success of Kelsey's and other similar type restaurants. This place had the fastest service I've had for a long time! I went to the washroom before sitting down, and by the time I had returned, there was already a drink waiting for me at the table. Our waitress was fast throughout the whole meal. There was a lot to choose from on the menu, including a very extensive burger list (I guess burgers are their specialty?).
I had the chicken BLT burger and I was content with it. It was tasty, and of course, arrived very quickly. Before we were even fully finished, our waitress left the bill on our table. Quick quick quick!! Top marks for service at this restaurant!

Then on Saturday, we went to another family favourite, Happy Court. While not the more visually appealing restaurant, it's very consistent. The food is always the same, and so is the service. I enjoy their won-ton soup and that's always my first stop at their buffet. This visit I noticed some new items in their buffet, so it's nice to see them trying new things. Specifically the tiramisu dessert, that was great! I've never paid the bill there so I'm not too sure about its value in proportion to the food.
For more reviews of Happy Court, see ResToronto Reviews for Happy Court.

Family Dinner at The Blackhorn Dining Room

Close to my grandfather's house is a little hole in the wall restaurant called The Blackhorn Dining Room. Honestly, if I wasn't brought to this restaurant on my own, I never would have ventured into it because it looked like a dingy place that may not be too safe. I'm glad that I was taken there though, as it really is a gem!

The restaurant is run by a couple, who you see walking around the restaurant talking to the patrons. Our waitress recognized my grandfather, and gave us the same seat as he had eaten at the last time he was there. They are a very friendly staff, and even if they are a tad slow, they make up for it with their friendliness.

You get bread and pickles (delicious pickles, by the way!) as a starter. Then, if you choose a full entree, you get to choose from soup or salad. Their soups seem to be home made and are fantastic! I've had both pasta and steak there, both were great. Cooked just the way they should be.

Their dessert selection isn't that large. I've had the tartufo, which was just as it should be, but unlike any other restaurant.

Really, the main reason to visit this restaurant is for the service and friendly atmosphere.

For more reviews on The Blackhorn Dining Room, see ResToronto Reviews for The Blackhorn Dining Room.

Vacation time! LaPortas in Alexandria, Virginia

On my 5 day vacation, I went down to Washington DC for some much needed R&R. Jason and I went to a restaurant in old town Alexandria, Virginia. We had a bit of trouble getting at the restaurant because we tried to get at it from the back, but that's impossible. There is a parking garage right by the restaurant though, and there was no parking attendant there when we showed up so we didn't have to pay anything.

This is a business casual restaurant, so I wouldn't suggest walking in off the street in jeans and a t-shirt. The restaurant is in the bottom floor of an office building, and looks like it could easily convert into an office space if it had to. Not the most appealing of atmospheres. Also, the patronage was definately older than most restaurants I go to.

I ended up ordering the salmon fettucini, and the sauce alone was delicious!! It was a dill cream sauce, I loved it! Our waitress was very attentive and friendly. We both ordered dessert, which was also quite good. The food here is definately worth the trip.

I think drinks + entree + dessert ended up costing us $30USD per person. Not too bad! (And I love the fact that sales tax down there is significantly less than it is up here).

So if you're ever in Alexandria, you should look this place up!

For more reviews, and an address, check out We8There LaPortas Reviews.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://restoronto-reviews.blogspot.com/2006/08/vacation-time-laportas-in-alexandria.html' title='Vacation time! From the outside, the restaurant looks like a cute place. It's got a nice patio too (that unfortunately couldn't be utilized because it was raining). Our group was put upstairs in the dining room. I had to use the washrooms, and I know that some people don't understand why I would talk about the washrooms in a restaurant review, but I believe that part of good atmosphere is having a nice restaurant. I thought that their restroom was rather grungy. The paint was peeling, there was paint on the toilet, and nothing looked clean. Though it did look like they tried hard to decorate the place.

Since we had arrived before 5pm, we were waiting until after 5 pm to order off the dinner menu. Before then, I split an order of spring rolls with 2 other people at the table, and they were amazing! They had potatoes in them, which is odd to me for spring rolls, but they were delicious!!

However it seemed that after 5pm, things went downhill. We ordered our dinner around 5:15, and had to wait a good hour and a half to actually get our meals. The excuse was that everything is made from scratch. Once the meals did start arriving, there was probably a 10 minute span from when the first person received their meal, until when the last person received their meal. Once I received my meal, I started to eat the mashed potatoes, and they were freezing cold! It was disgusting. I had to send them back to be reheated. Also, I had ordered my steak medium rare, and it was cooked well done. I don't want to know what the steak would have been like if I had asked for well done.

As if that weren't enough, once the bills came (we asked for seperate bills), they weren't actually seperate bills, and we had to figure out whose food was on which bill. My dinner ended up being on three different bills.

Needless to say, not much of a tip was left after going to this restaurant, and I definately will not be returning. I've been to Korean BBQ before and quite enjoyed it so I was looking forward to this restaurant. We had made reservations so once we got there we were seated immediately. Unfortunately, since each table has a grill in it (or more than one grill), you can't move tables around to sit with a large group. Our group ended up taking up 3 tables. We ordered the all you can eat meat, with extra short ribs. You're given quite a selection of food! There are all the regular Korean/Asian foods, like kimchi, sprouts, tofu and sticky rice. Then there was chicken, beef, and pork (as well as the short ribs) to cook on the grill.

That is the main reason for coming to this place. It is a lot of fun to cook your food, even though you may think that you could do that at home, so why bother coming to a restaurant. But the service here is excellent. They are very quick with bringing more meat, more rice, more drinks, more napkins, anything you need really.

The atmosphere is somewhat less appealing. I found it kind of dark and dingy looking, and the chairs aren't that comfortable.

The cost of the food is a little pricey, but you leave with a full stomach (and then some!!!).

For more reviews on Korean Grill House, see ResToronto Reviews for Korean Grill House.

Birthday Dinner for Mom @ The Keg

The family went out for a birthday dinner at The Keg last night. The accoustics in this place suck though, because you can hear the conversation of everyone around you.

We all ordered Prime Rib Classics, and we were told that there might not be enough prime rib left to serve us. How can The Keg possibly run out of prime rib? That should be illegal. Thankfully none of us were kept from that yummy prime rib. You can always count on good food at The Keg, but you do have to pay for it. However, you'll never leave without being completely full!

The service was ok. The parking lot was surprisingly packed at 6pm. This place is definately a family restaurant. It is not by any means a trendy spot to dine. The average age of patrons is probably older than most other restaurants. We had to wait a while to be seated because it was so busy.

The menu was huge and the prices were low! We all ordered one of the specials, a turkey dinner. It didn't look too appetizing, but I thought it was pretty tasty. However, we did have a bit of a problem with the service. I ordered my drink soon after sitting down, but I had to ask for it again, and didn't get it until after I had received my dinner.

It was weird because around 7pm, the restaurant cleared out. There was hardly anyone left in the restaurant! I'm not too sure I would return, unless I was with my parents or my grandparents.

For more reviews on Dundas Street Grille, see the Dundas Street Grille ResToronto Reviews.

Also, after dinner we headed over to the Yellow Cup Cafe, which is a cute place that serves sandwiches, salads, all different types of coffee and desserts. It has a great atmosphere (and yummy coffee!). A gang of us from work headed over to Bistro 222 on Richmond. It's in a weird area, because during the day there looks to be nothing on the street, but they are actually mostly clubs.

Anyways, we arrived there with dinner reservations for 6pm and headed upstairs to their rooftop patio, which was fairly full. The service up there was good. They asked if we needed more chairs, and empty bottles/glasses were cleared quickly. Around 7 we decided to go back downstairs to eat dinner. The restaurant was empty! What restaurant is empty on a Friday night at 7pm? But it was too late to back out.

Ordering drinks took a while. Infact, from my time of ordering to my time of receiving it was about 10-15 minutes. I ordered a Diet Coke, and what was placed infront of me was a can of President's Choice Diet Coke and a glass of ice. President's Choice Diet Coke is the cheapest of the cheap!! And I'm paying $3 for this? I could go buy 1/2 the case for $3!

When we try to order, the waitress isn't too sure what the soup of the day is. She also didn't know if you could replace fries with something else for your dinner. I tried to order steak, medium, and to replace the fries with roasted potatoes. I got a steak, well done, and fries. For the amount of money that it was, this should not have happened. Even if they had told me that I could only get fries, that would be better than telling me I could get roasted potatoes and give me fries instead.

Someone that had dessert said that it was very good. We perhaps all would have been better off eating only dessert!

For more reviews on this restaurant, see Bistro 222 ResToronto Reviews.

With a name like Superior, it has to be good?

I was downtown for some theatre on the weekend (Canon theatre), and walking along Yonge Street I saw the restaurant Superior, which is fairly close to the Canon. We walked into the restaurant and the entrance is fairly impressive. There is a massive wooden bar located to the left, and stairs to a second story section of the restaurant.

We were seated on the first floor of the restaurant, near the middle of the restaurant, and were one of 3 other tables full in the entire restaurant. This was slightly weird, as it was noon and the street was very busy, so why was there no one in the restaurant?

The menu was very limited, and I was pretty disappointed with it. I didn't know what half of the items were, and the things I did know were not quite to my taste. This is definately not the place to go for people that want simple food. I ended up ordering the steak sandwich, which was pretty tasty. Our waiter was attentive, as he should be since no one else was in the restaurant.

I would return to this place if they beefed up their menu. By about 7pm, there was hardly anyone left in town! We didn't want to cook dinner so we headed over to the local Swiss Chalet. We can't get enough of their chicken!

When the parking lot is close to empty, take this as a sign that there is no one in the restaurant! I think there may have been about 5 other families in the restaurant in total. And just a note for those with young ones, this Swiss Chalet location has a kids area for you children to play!

I got my favourite, the double leg dinner, which was great as always. I think our waitress was fairly new, as she seemed to forget about us once dinner was brought out. We had to signal to her to get us refills.

This restaurant is by no means an up scale restaurant, but for family dining it serves its purpose.

For more reviews of this Swiss Chalet, see ResToronto Reviews for Swiss Chalet on Leanne Road.

Dinner on the warmest day of the year - Baton Rouge

By the time I got home from work, I was too warm to do anything. I decided to head out for dinner up to Hart Land in Mississauga to a somewhat new restaurant up there called Baton Rouge. I had been to the Baton Rouge at Eaton Center and wasn't too impressed, but I thought I would give this one a try with an open mind.

The biggest downfall to this restaurant is its prices. For the atmosphere, services, and food it provides, it is way too pricey. A steak runs upwards of $25 and the prime rib is over $27. I am a prime rib fan though, so despite the price I decided to try it out. It was delicious, and the portion was way too big to finish in one serving. It would be better for my wallet if they reduced the portion sizes, and hence the prices. That would give this restaurant the extra edge and probably kick it up a rating or two in my book.

Our waitress was ok. There really wasn't much to complain about with her. The acoustics in the place were weird though. The ceilings are high, which I think carries the sound weirdly and at times I had trouble hearing my waitress. Also, the booths are slightly elevated, which makes you feel like you're peering down into other tables around you.

Given the high prices, I expected a mint after my dinner. Maybe I've just been spoiled with good restaurants recently.

Overall, a good meal, but too pricey.

For more reviews on Baton Rouge in Mississauga, visit ResToronto Reviews for Baton Rouge.

Sunday Lunch at Shopsy's in Mississauga

My mom and I decided to go out for lunch today. Someone had recently left a review for Bobby's Hideaway in Streetsville, so we decided to try it out. I haven't been there since they remodelled their restaurant, so around 12:45 we took off. When we arrived, the parking lot was completely full! There was not one parking spot to be hard. That should be a testament to their food/service!

We passed a bunch of other restaurants heading north but most of them were closed. We eventually found ourselves north of the 401 on Erin Mills Parkway, in an industrial section of town. There was a new mall built there and it has about 4 restaurants. Shopsy's is where we ended up. Being an industrial section of town, there weren't many people in the restaurant. This ment that we were seated quickly, and our server was attentive. I ordered a club sandwich, which although it was a little dry, was just what I expected. Their fries weren't the best fries in the world, but they were ok. We also tried the onion rings, which were better than the fries. The food is a little overpriced, but I expect that from Shopsy's. As for the atmosphere, it was kind of sterile, but it as clean.

For more reviews, see ResToronto Reviews for Shopsy's in Mississauga.

A Family Favourite - Peter's on Eglinton

This is one of my family's favourite restaurants. We make return trips here all the time and never get sick of it! Usually there is a line to get in, but if you wait late enough (or you go on a long weekend), you can get in fairly easily. The average age of waiters and waitresses is quite a bit older than any other restaurant. And you can tell that these people are experienced. They have also been working there for a long time because every time we return, we see the same people.

The inside of Peter's has chandeliers, multiple types of wallpaper, stained glass, but is still somehow appeasing to the eye. Or maybe I've just gotten used to it.

Their most tried item on the menu by my family is their deli sandwiches. These sandwiches are so big that they are impossible to eat like a real sandwich. Peter's puts other restaurants to shame in terms of proportion and value. We always come home with a Styrofoam container because we can never finish our meal. But if you aren't in the mood for a deli sandwich then there are tons of other items on the menu that you could have. I had the fish and chips, which I think is the first time I've tried it. The fish was light and fluffy, which made it possible to eat both pieces. I also really enjoy the open faced roast beef sandwich. They also provide you with buns before the meal (which I don't suggest eating, you need to leave room for your huge meal!).

For more reviews on Peter's, see ResToronto Reviews for Peter's on Eglinton

After Theatre Lunch - Bistro 333 in Toronto

After a day at the theatre, some friends and I decided to go for a very late lunch/very eary dinner. It was just after 4pm and the restaurants in the Entertainment District were just starting to open. We wandered along King Street looking at menus to decide which restaurant to visit and settled on Bistro 333.

We were the first patrons inside of the restaurant (there were a couple on the patio). I can't imagine this place when it is busy, it must get fairly loud because it's a very open space. Our server was pretty good, but I noticed that when another group came in, they got glasses of water an bread to start their meal, which we did not. But our meals came in record speed. I guess it helps that we didn't order anything fancy. Two of us ordered ceasar salad, and one ordered a chicken mango wrap. My salad was great, the dressing was homemade and vinigrette based, like real ceasar should be! I also tried some of my friends fries, which were great.

For more on this restaurant, check out ResToronto Reviews for Bistro 333.

Summerlicious at Barootes Casual Dining

A group of us went to Barootes Casual Dining for Summerlicious. It's the restaurant right over Quotes Bar & Grill (and I think they are owned by the same people). While Quotes is more like a place to grab a quick lunch, Barootes is a definately for dining.

It was raining when we arrived, and we were graciously offered a place to put our umbrellas so we didn't have to take them with us to the table. We were seated quickly because we had made reservations. The person serving us drinks wasn't very good, and thankfully he wasn't our server. He forgot what drinks people ordered, and for the orders he did remember, he gave the drinks to the wrong person. One thing I thought was funny was that rather than telling us to wines they had specially, they told us we could go up to the bar and look at them. I'd rather be told than go running around the restaurant.

The summerlicious menu had food that I was interested in, so I didn't even look at their regular menu. For $25, I had crab cakes, steak & fries, and tartufo! The steak was probably the beste part of the meal, but the tartufo was very good too! The service throughout the meal was consistent. For the most part, our water glasses were topped off (near the end, they weren't). When multiple people paid with credit cards, we had enough pens on the table for each person. Little things like that were handled very well.

As for the atmosphere, the place is fairly dark because it has dark stained wooden beams running across the ceiling an it isn't well lit except for at the tables. I loved the paintings on the wall. They were all very colourful, and very interesting!

This was a good experience, and I would return to check out their regular menu.

For more Barootes reviews, go to ResToronto Reviews for Barootes.

Go train not running? Dinner downtown at Marinela's

I, like tens of thousands of other commuters, was affected by the freight train derailment earlier this afternoon and had no way of getting home. So rather than try to quickly find a way to get home, I made a reservation at a little Italian restaurant called Marinela's. I hate the heat, so I sat indoors, but they have both a curbside patio and an upstairs patio that offer seclusion and charm.

The atmosphere of Marinela's is great. It's a very small restaurant, with only about 12 tables inside (that I could tell of anyways), maybe even less, and a long bar. There are lights and dried herbs attached to the roof, and a great view of the patio. The restaurant is basically in an old house.

It is a little pricey (pasta mostly costing over $15 and steaks costing over $30), but it is worth it! There is also about a page of wines (mostly Italian, not surprisingly!). I ordered a starter of brushetta, which although it isn't the best brushetta I've ever had, was still delicious! Very fresh.
My main course was the chicken fettuccine. The sauce that this pasta is served in is devine. It is a cream sauce, but there is something about it that makes it super tasty. There were also mushrooms and tomatoes in the pasta.
And of course, I couldn't resist the dessert! I had a tiramisu. Although it wasn't as good as my pasta, it was still a nice way to finish the meal.

Also, most of the other patrons decided to use the patio, so the main dining area was very quite.

The only downside to this restaurant is that all the parking near there is very expensive. It could cost you $10 for a Friday night to park just for dinner.

I would definitely go back to this restaurant (infact, this was my second time returning). And, I did manage to make it home!

For more information, see other Marinela's restaurant reviews.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://restoronto-reviews.blogspot.com/2006/07/go-train-not-running-dinner-downtown.html' title='Go train not running? There wasn't a seat left in the place to be had! We have gone there before for round robin play and enjoyed it. We turned around and headed south-east.

Stop 2 was the Rooster & Firkin. When we got there, there were only 2 groups of people sitting infront of the projector screen showing the game. These 2 groups took up the entire space infront of the screen and there was no place left to sit! I did overhear one of the members of these groups asking to turn up the volume - they have volume at Coopers. Then the bartender said "Then go to Coopers!". That was our clue to leave.

Stop 3 was the Mad Hatter Olde British Pub. Once again, absolutely no seats! Although, I wish we had arrived there on time because they had both a projector screen and an HD Tv!

By now, we were about 10 minutes away from game play. One of my friends and I remembered there being a pub inside of a Holiday Inn way up near the 401/403. This also happens to be where we watched the previous World Cup final (because it was one of the few places we could find open at 7am). So we found good seats at Bistro 100. It was freezing cold when we got there, but thankfully they turned down the AC for us. The place kind of reminded me of someone's finished basement. It had a bar and a widescreen tv. The server was fairly good, although he did have one slip up. He removed my friend's plate while she was watching the game (her not realizing it was gone), but she wasn't finished. He made up for it by bringing her a brand new plate of food! The menu was more for dinner than it was for lunch. And it was fairly expensive. More expensive than it should have been. I had a burger however, and it was very tasty! Also note that drinks are not free refills! I wouldn't go back, but for a tired traveller it's not a bad place to go to.

Palm's Court - Mississauga Casual Restaurant

The family went to Palm's Court Restaurant today. There were 5 of us in total. Whenever I visit this place, I wonder how anyone managed to find the restaurant, let alone venture into it. It's in a strip mall diagonally across from the hospital, and it looks like a hole in the wall. Yet when you get inside, it's not bad looking. We were seated immediately. Most of the patrons of this restaurant are ederly. I'm not too sure if this is because the restaurant is in an area where the population is older, or because it is near the hospital.
Our waitress was kind of slow, but she did a fairly good job. However, when she brought the drinks, she managed to drop one of the wine glasses onto a plate and smash it into pieces. She was very thorough about removing anything that could have glass in it, except for one thing - the wine itself!! It's like she didn't mind re-cleaning stuff, but she didn't want to waste the money on the wine. Most of us had the roast beef dinner. It was cooked well, and had a nice selection of potatoes and vegetables along with it. It was a good sized portion.
The price wasn't too bad. I believe it was around $25 per person (full meal and drinks).
Overall, I give it a 7.5/10

For more reviews on this restaurant, see Palm's Court ResToronto Reviews
